Prerequisites
You must have a good command of Excel and a basic understanding of Power BI. A Microsoft 365 account with access to Microsoft Fabric (free trial available) is required for the hands-on exercises.
Objectives
◗ Understand the architecture of Microsoft Fabric and how its various components (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Synapse, Power BI) fit together.
◗ Identify finance use cases where Fabric provides added value compared to Power BI alone.
◗ Build a simple data pipeline within Microsoft Fabric.
◗ Store data in an SQL database within Fabric.
◗ Use this data in Power BI to create a custom dashboard.
Training program
◗ Overview of Microsoft Fabric: The Unified Data Platform
– What is Microsoft Fabric? How does it compare to Azure, Power BI, and Synapse
– Key components: Lakehouse, Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Power BI, Data Activator
– The OneLake concept: unified storage and centralized governance
✔ UNDERSTAND | Illustration: diagram of the Fabric architecture and the role of each component in a financial data project
✔ EVALUATE | Quiz: What is the latest trend in the data market that Microsoft Fabric exemplifies?
✔ APPLY | Case study: Presentation of the overarching case study
◗ Import and store data in Fabric
– Overview of the target architecture: components, steps, etc.
– Definitions and uses of a data warehouse and a data lake
– Principles of a pipeline for automating data collection
✔ APPLY | Hands-on exercise: Collecting and storing Open Data in a Lakehouse
✔ EVALUATE | Quiz: What are the differences between a Lakehouse and a Warehouse in Fabric?
◗ Explore the power of notebooks in Fabric
– Overview of how an API works
– Initialize a notebook and configure an API request
– Retrieve and manipulate the results of a request
✔ APPLY | Hands-on exercise: Retrieve data from an API and manipulate it within Microsoft Fabric
✔ EVALUATE | Quiz: How would you define an API and its benefits for our day-to-day operations?
◗ Build a real-time Power BI dashboard using the Microsoft Fabric platform
– Overview of the import mode and introduction to Direct Lake
– Building a data frame and a Power BI dashboard
– Setting up regular updates
✔ EXPERIMENT | Workshop: Automate data collection and observe how visuals are populated in real time
✔ APPLY | Practical exercise: Build a dashboard tailored to the context of the overarching case study
✔ EVALUATE | Quiz: How do you organize a data pipeline for a use case specific to a finance role?
Why choose this course?
Power BI is a powerful visualization tool, but it covers only part of the data value chain. Microsoft Fabric unifies data ingestion, storage, transformation, and visualization within a single cloud platform. This workshop will give each participant a practical understanding of what Fabric offers by building a complete pipeline in real time using open data—from raw files to a Power BI dashboard.
